According to Anna’s Cake House, in Vancouver, Canada, one of the hottest trends in wedding cakes is actually cupcakes! Like most of the companies that bake cupcakes for weddings, Anna’s offers the bride and groom a selection of cupcake trees to look at. These cupcake trees are what the cupcakes are actually presented on, and they come in sizes that are anywhere from two or three tiers to seven tiers. Some of these towering trees of cupcakes can look quite impressive at a wedding reception.
Minicakes are an elegant alternative to cupcakes (minicakes from Anna’s are pictured below!), and they can be served on these trees, as well. Like Japanese mini cakes these types of wedding cakes are usually supported by plastic oval wrap. There is usually a cake bottom, a mousse filling, more cake, and sometimes fruit, whipped cream or another type of filling. These minicakes can also be decorated in unusual ways, with charms, with fluted pastry cones or marzipan fruit.
Having cakes on each table is another trend that is becoming increasingly popular. Essentially, each table gets a 6-inch to 8-inch round cake that is set out whole or pre-cut so that the guests can serve themselves. The idea is that these smaller cakes are uncut so that the guests can cut whatever size they like. This type of cake can also be served with different toppings and a selection of fruit.
