If you’re not sure what flavor to choose for your wedding cake, why not choose one of the following trendy options? Here are some of the latest trends in wedding cake flavors:

  • Orange Creamsiclecake slice
  • Nutella
  • Rasberry Chocolate
  • Espresso
  • Dulche de Leche
  • Ginger
  • Lemon

Your guests will love the variety, and if you’re afraid of the cake flavor being too “out there,” you can always order one of the layers to be vanilla. That way, guests who aren’t as adventurous eaters can still chow down on a piece of cake at your wedding

wedding cake squareIf you’re on a budget, every dollar counts when planning your wedding. Did you know that you can save money on your cake by changing the shape you order? Most brides choose shape according to visual preferences, but shape can also save you a lot of money!

Why? Well, first, certain cakes are harder to cut or cover with frosting. Carved cakes that are meant to look like objects (such as a castle) will cost the most, followed by unusual shapes with a lot of corners, like hexagons. Heart-shaped cakes are also typically more expensive, since they are harder to cover cleanly.

That leaves round cakes and square cakes. In general, it is least expensive to order a square cake because you’ll get more slices of cake out of the same size. It depends on the bakery. If you need, for example, cake for 200 guests, it might cost more to order a round cake because there needs to be an extra tier.

Some wedding cake designers charge by the slice, but then also charge an additional flat fee based on the design of the cake you order. So, if you’re shopping around for the best price, make sure you call the bakery, not just rely on by-the-slice prices you read on their website.

Nintendo Cake

There have been several Super Mario Nintendo wedding cakes out there, but we at Cakella have found some of the best. These cakes are made at Christopher Garren’s Let Them Eat Cake.

Let Them Eat Cake is a bakery with award winning baker/artists who have appeared on several Food Network cake challenges.

All cakes are made with only 10% edible cake, fondant, and decorations. There are not plastic or styrofoam fillers.  The also come in a wide variety of flavors, such as bananas foster pecan, pistachio pear fizz, and pumpkin spice cake which include carmelized apple chunks. YUM!

If you love your video games, or just want a totally cute Mario and princess cake, these are a great bet for you. Also, Let Them Eat Cake also allows you create custom made cakes, so you can add your own creative touches related to your favorite Nintendo games. Cakes include Yoshi, mushrooms, Luigi and Peach. Even if you aren’t a big video game fan, you have to admit that these cakes are adorable.

Most brides spend hours wondering what song they are going to play for their first dance with the groom or even for the Father-Daughter dance, so we at Cakella have decided to save you a bit of time to find a super fun song to play while you are cutting the cake.

Quite appropriately, the song is called, “Cut the Cake” by the Average White Band. The fun thing about this song is not only that the lyrics are all about eating cake, but the tune is upbeat, fun and soulful. It actually is quite remeniscent of a James Brown type song and will keep the mood at your wedding totally enjoyable.

You can purchase the song on Amazon.com or buy the entire album, also titled “Cut the Cake.”

Here is a video of the Average White Band playing their hit song that could bring a smile to your guests during that special moment when it’s time to cut the cake.

LYRICS

Cut The Cake
give me a little piece
let me lick up the cream

Cut The Cake
well, just a little piece
baby you know what I mean

Cut The Cake
give me a little piece
a little lovin’ on the side

Cut The Cake
I need a little piece
just to keep me satisfied

CHORUS:
gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Well it tastes so good don’t pass it all around
gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
You got to cut it down!

Cut The Cake
just a little piece
of your sweet love

Cut The Cake
don’t you know that I
can’t get enough

Cut The Cake
want you to know that I
ain’t a greedy man

Cut The Cake
don’t you know that I’ll
do the best I can

REPEAT CHORUS

Cut The Cake
give me a little piece
let me lick up the cream

Cut The Cake
well, just a little piece
baby you know what I mean

Cut The Cake
give me a little piece
a little lovin’ on the side

Cut The Cake
I need a little piece
just to keep me satisfied

REPEAT CHORUS

gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Well it tastes so good don’t pass it all around
gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Never knew you cooked the way you do
gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Tastes so good don’t pass the recipe around
gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
You got to
cut it DOWN
cut it DOWN
cut it DOWN
Cut The Cake

Do you want buttercream filling or ganache? Real flowers? Sugar? Fondant? Do you need a gluten-free cake? The terms surrounding choosing a wedding cake can be extremely confusing – here’s a quick list of the terms most commonly thrown around by bakeries:cake icing

Buttercream: This is the icing that you commonly think of when you think of cake, and what you’ll find with cakes that you get at a grocery store. Don’t worry – most wedding cakes taste much better than the kind you’ll find in grocery stores! Buttercream is created with butter (or shortening) and sugar, and it can be flavored to taste like just about anything. The higher quality of ingredients, the better tasting your cake will be. Buttercream can be used inside your cake as a filling, as well as as the outer icing.

Fondant: Fondant is another type of icing that you can use on your cake. This is a sugary type of dough that can be colored easily and looks extremely smooth when applied correctly. Fondant is typically only used on the outside of the cake, and can be used for decorations as well.

Ganache: Generally used inside for a filling, ganache is a chocolate cream made from heavy cream, butter, and melted chocolate. It is extremely rich, like fudge, but doesn’t set up as a solid like you’ll find with fudge. It can be used on the outside of cakes, but doesn’t give you the same polished finish as you’ll find with fondant, and the coating will be much tinner than with buttercream.

Gluton-Free: You’ll only need a gluton-free cake if you have guests or wedding party members who have allergies to gluton, which is found in wheat products.

Gumpaste (or sugarpaste): Made from sugar and cornstarch, this material can be used to create more elaborate decorations than are possible with fondant. They harden and aren’t especially good to eat (even though they are edible), but more realistic or fine details are possible with gumpaste.

Marzipan: Marzipan is made with almonds and sugar and is similar to fondant. The taste is extremely different, and it can be used for icing or for decorations. Unless you love marzipan, this may not be the best choice for icing your entire wedding cake, as it isn’t as popular a taste as other types of icing.

If you don’t understand the terms being used, make sure you ask and get a sample if you can. Don’t be ashamed of not understanding your choices – cake decorators work with these items every day and often don’t realize that they sometimes use terms that others may not understand. When in doubt, ask before you order!

cut the cakeIf you and your groom have a fun-loving spirit and don’t mind getting a little messy, you might want to smash a little cake on your wedding day, as is traditional. As you feed one another a bite, don’t be afraid to playfully get icing all over your new husband’s face! There are a few things to keep in mind, though.

First, make sure that you agree on a cake smash before the big day – or at least talk about it and ensure that you’re both fine no matter what happens. Usually, the bride cares more than the groom, but your groom may not want cake in his face. If you call a truce and do the smashing anyway, he could spend the rest of the night upset with you about it, and that’s no way to start your life together.

Next, remember that you’re wearing really expensive clothing that stain easily. Even if you don’t care if there’s a little cake on your dress, your groom is probably wearing a rented tux, so if there’s cake all over it, the dry cleaning will be much more expensive. You could even ruin something and have to pay for it – and you can bet that their shirts and ties cost more than a few dollars. So, if you smash, smash carefully.

You might want to have some mild rules for your smashing. For example, stay away from the eyes, and you might want to ask your groom to avoid too much smearing so that your makeup isn’t totally ruined. Cake can also wreak havoc on your hair if it is near your face, as well as be a pain to get out of his facial hair.

Of course, part of the fun of smashing cake is just doing it – so don’t hold back too much! You might have to redo you makeup in the bathroom, and he might still have bits of icing in his goatee the next day, but the pictures will be priceless, and you’ll always remember how much fun you had at your wedding.

cake on cake standAlong with the dress, the cake is one of the focus points of the wedding. If you’re having just a few close friends and family members attending, you don’t need a three-tier cake to feed everyone. However, a very small cake can be underwhelming, especially if you order a simple style. Here are some ways in which you can make your small cake look grand:

~ Use a cake pedestal. You don’t have to choose one in the same style as the one pictured, but a cake stand raises the small cake, giving the illusion of multiple layers.

~ Order a faux cake. If you only need one layer, you can still get that three-tiered cake. Just ask for display “cakes” as the bottom layers – basically, dummy cakes made from Styrofoam. You’ll pay for teh decorating, but you won’t have tons of cake you don’t need.

~ Decorate the table. Use flowers, petals, decorative table clothes, ribbons, and more to create a special setting for your cake, no matter how small it is.

~ Buy many individual cakes instead of one big cake. You’ll make a statement with a few dozen small cakes, which can be displayed on your table with one slightly larger layer for you to cut.

cake tastingMost bakeries offer free cake tastings for brides and grooms ordering their wedding cake. Don’t be bridezilla when you go to your tasting and consultation. Here are some etiquette tips that every bride should keep in mind:

~ If you’re “auditioning” bakeries, let them know. If you’re considering multiple bakeries and don’t know where you want to order your cake, you should let them know that before you’re tasting. This isn’t about free cake. Be willing to pay for your tasting or just try a single type of cake to get an idea of what they could do. Have a larger tasting with the one baker you choose to make your cake.

~ Be clear about flavors you do not like. There’s no sense for them to give you a slice of chocolate mocha espresso cake if you and your groom hate the flavor of coffee of a slice of pina colada cake if you’re allergic to coconut. When you’re on the phone, talk about all of the available flavors and mention kinds that you don’t need to taste. Keep in mind that some cake decorators limit you to four to eight flavors, even though they might offer dozens of kinds of cake.

~ Have some tact with your criticisms. Remember, these cakes are your baker’s pride and job. Be gentle with your comments. It makes sense to try them all and talk about what you like about each one. Then, ask for a few minutes to talk alone, and discuss the options with your groom without worrying about hurting any feelings.
