Apple PieTurkey, mashed potatoes, rolls and pie, oh my! Thanksgiving is stuffed with un-figure-friendly foods only to give way to the next threat: Christmas cookies. Whether your wedding is during this fruitful time or months away, your wedding diet can be in severe danger around the holidays. Well put that drumstick down, give those cookies away and get serious about these tips to survive the holiday season on a diet!

The basics: What anybody on a diet should start with

1 - Visualize your goal! Let’s be honest - we all stand in front of the fridge, hungry or not, on a hunt for the perfect snack. Nip this bad habit in the bud by taping a picture of your dream wedding dress on the fridge so that you can always see where you want to be. Always succumb to the drive-thru? Put another picture in your car. You want to fit into that dress!

2 - Count calories. A average-sized woman can diet (without starvation, which is a point that you don’t want to reach) at roughly 1500 calories a day. (This varies depending on your age and size.) Do you know how much food that is? Find a free calorie counter to journal your intake and track your activity. Learning about portion sizes, types of foods and essential nutrients is key to any diet plan.

Parties, parties and more parties: How to stay a social on your diet

3 - Cook a healthy appetizer! When the invitations to parties multiply, don’t abandon your diet. Bring a dish that still fits into your diet plan so you know you will at least have one healthy thing to eat.

4 - Don’t drink alcohol. This is the biggest tip for parties. Empty calories may taste good, but they do not have to wear that dress. And the more drinks you have, the more you’ll be able to rationalize that third cookie. A good stand-in is seltzer water with a lime - it’s refreshing, the bubbles give you a full feeling, and it’s a festive drink.

The long stretch: Stay on track before and after

5 - Ask your friends and family for support. With your wedding looming, there are probably more people than just the bride who want to lose a few pounds for the big day. Share the news that you are dieting. This can lead to moral support and a coalition of healthy dishes for everybody to share. Being healthy is not just for the bride!

6 - Stick to your everyday health routine. While holidays are particularly threatening to a wedding diet, the greatest tool you can use during this time is what you already know. Start establishing a diet plan, exercise schedule, and healthy lifestyle that will follow you up until your wedding day and beyond.

Losing weight and getting fit can be a major challenge during this busy time of your life. Just remember, the holidays and your wedding are a time to enjoy with friends, family and your fiancee. If dieting overwhelms your ability to be good company and have fun with those you love, then bear in mind that they all love you for you, no matter those few extra pounds.
