It might take you months and months to find that perfect wedding dress and it is arguably the item that you’re wearing on the most memorable day of your life. Since you spend so much time and money on a single garmet, it makes sense to spend a bit more to preserve it. Preserving your wedding gown can be done in a number of ways, so find something that works for you. The important thing is that you do something with your gown as soon as possible. Too many brides throw their gown in the laundry basket, leave for their honeymoon and forget about it forever.

First, no matter how you choose to preserve the dress, it is important to get it cleaned. The longer you wait, the more the stains will set in, making them harder to clean. As soon as you return from the honeymoon, take your dress to the cleaners, noting anywhere that it needs to be treated for stains or repaired.

Next, decide how you want to store your dress. Archival-quality storage is best, as this will prevent your dress from yellowing or breaking down over the years. If you plan to wear the dress again, give it to a daughter to wear, etc., consider storage options carefully. You’ll want to prevent crease lines, moth damage and shrinking so that it can be worn in the future.

However, if you’re going to keep your dress purely for the memories, there are many creative preservation options you can try. For example, why not cut up your wedding dress to use in multiple projects? (Did I hear a gasp?) You can use pieces to cover frames for your wedding pictures or create patches for quilts. You can even use it to make a christening gown for a your first baby.

You don’t have to resort to storing your dress in a box under your bed. Do what makes the most sense to you, even if that means cutting up your dress.
