Wedding ViolinistWhether you are looking for classical, Big Band, pop music or anything in between, having live music for your wedding ceremony and reception can bring some class and fun to the festivities.

If you want to have live musicians at your reception, you need to be very selective when hiring. Bad music or flaky musicians can ruin your event.

The best place to start looking is through personal referrals. Ask friends, family members and your other wedding vendors for recommendations. Oftentimes your reception site may have someone that they use routinely. You should also ask your local orchestra or symphony, as many of these musicians can be hired out for private engagements

Once you have narrowed it down a handful of choices, ask for a demo CD from each of the musicians. This will help you narrow your selections even further. When you have two or three choices that you really like, try to go see each one of them playing live. A tape can only tell you so much. By actually seeing them play in person, you can hear the music for yourself, and see if they have the stage presence and vibe you are looking for.

Remember to start looking for your musicians very early on in the wedding planning process. It’s not unusual for the best wedding musicians to be booked a year or more advance, particularly for weekend timeslots.
