ShoesThere is an line from Miranda, the stiff, cynical lawyer from HBO’s “Sex and the City”  that she delivers while looking for a new house with her new husband and new son – “Oh my God, I’m married.”

For many career-singles crossing over into the married life, the realization of living with somebody, sharing a life somebody, and essentially, being with somebody for the rest of your life can hit hard.

Some brides look for advice from each other in forums while others just try to prepare for the change. Beyond moving in together (provided that you didn’t live together before the wedding, which is growing increasingly uncommon), what are the changes from marriage that you never expected? For many, the biggest changes come from saying goodbye to small details of single behavior you just did not notice before.

  • The remote control won’t always be where you left it and random pairs of (big) shoes could be anywhere.
  • Walking to the kitchen at midnight to stare at the refrigerator and then not eating anything will seem silly.
  • Standing in front of the mirror for hours trying new make-up tips, hairstyles or updos will seem strange.
  • Spending Saturday morning in bed watching romantic comedies in your pajamas, eating a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, and not showering all day won’t be as common.

Sure many of these things may sound insignificant, but it is important to recognize that a life change is about to occur on all levels from big to small. Adjusting to married life is usually a regular segue to adjusting to baby life, so the first step is recognizing the change, let go of the little stuff, and the bigger things will fall more easily into place.
