812116_bridal_bouquet_.jpgWinter is definitely the most challenging season in which to hold a wedding, particularly if you’re located in a snowy locale. But if you and your husband-to-be are snowbirds, you might want to consider holding a winter wedding. One main problem winter brides face, however, is choosing flowers.

Flowers are for the spring and summer, right? Absolutely not! You can still have beautiful bouquets for yourself and your bridesmaids, even if you’re married in a cold climate.

First, consider color. You should choose a color scheme that makes you happy, but keep in mind that certain colors do scream “winter” more than others. Reds and greens are popular, of course, but if you’re opposed to having a wedding reminiscent of Christmas, why not go with some beautiful white bouquets? As shown on Knot for Life, a cascading white lily bouquet is classy, but still appropriate for winter weddings. There are a number of other white flowers you can choose as well to create the same effect.

Also, talk to your florist about the availability and strength of the flowers you want to use. Although you may love the look of a certain flower, they may not be able to withstand the cold, and shipping them in may be a problem. You don’t want half of your order dead upon arrival! Instead, look for plants that can stand up to the winter weather.

Flowerella has a great article series on flowers that are in season in the winter. This article will give you suggestions if you’re planning to have blue, green, lavendar, orange or pink flowers. This article will give you great options if you’re planning for a purple, red, white or yellow wedding bouquet.

Lastly, when choosing flowers for your winter bouquet, remember that adding some cold-weather foliage can turn a summer bouquet in one wonderful for winter. Holly or even evergreen trimmings work well to carry down the aisle.

Of course, this is YOUR wedding. If you want a summery-looking bouquet, order it! Don’t let your wedding date limit you when planning that perfect day. You can always look for realistic silk options, in which case any flower you want will be available year-round!
