tux.jpgAccording to About Tuxedos from Cometo.us, you should budget $100-200 per tuxedo for your wedding. Ouch! If you’re helping out the groomsmen (which isn’t necessary, but which many brides and grooms do), just a five-man wedding party will average $750. You don’t get to keep the tuxes either - that’s just the rental fee!

What’s a bride on a budget to do? Put those penny-pinching skills to the test! Here are the top five ways to save money on your groom’s tux and the tuxes of the other men in your wedding party:

1. Buy instead of renting. Unless you’re getting a really fancy tux that would be super-expensive to buy, buying makes a lot more sense in the long run. You can buy a used tux and then keep it to wear again or you can resell it after you’ve had it dry-cleaned for almost the same price you paid for it.

2. Keep it clean. Your groom will have to sign a contract that says that he will pay for damages, so be careful at the reception. If you do spill something on the tux, make sure that your best man takes it to the dry cleaner as soon as possible so the stain can be removed.

3. Ask about package deals. If you get the tux at the same shop you get other clothing items, they may give you a discount. Make sure you let them know that you’re shopping around for the best price. Sometimes, if you order enough tuxes, they’ll throw in a rental for free.

4. Wear your own shoes. No one notices the groom’s shoes anyway! Although there may be a pair that come with the tux, they’ll probably cost a bit extra. If your groom has dress shoes in the right color, just have him wear his own. They’ll be more comfortable at least. Well, as comfortable as dress shoes can be. Don’t go this route, however, if the shoes that the groom has aren’t the right color, or are old and faded. You will regret it if the groom’s shoes show up badly in the wedding photos.

5. Skip the tuxes and buy suits. Talk to your groomsmen about this. If you buy a really nice suit, most people won’t even notice that your party members aren’t wearing tuxes. Of course, it does mean that the groomsmen will have to shell out a bit more - but would they rather pay $300 for a nice suit they’ll be able to wear for other occasions or $150 for a tux they don’t get to keep? Most groomsmen are at least open to the idea.
